A Word from the Editor

The PIP eHealth Requirements

Last week the new PIP eHealth Incentive requirements were announced. The new requirements and associated dates are:

1.      Integrating Healthcare Identifiers into Electronic
Practice Records                                 1 February 2013

2.      Secure Messaging                               1 February 2013

3.      Data Records and Clinical Coding      1 February 2013

4.      Electronic Transfer of Prescriptions   1 February 2013

5.      PCEHR                                                 1 May 2013.

Practical assistance for practices to meet these requirements will be included in the eHealth Information Update evening on October 31, 2012. For the invitation to this event, open to all division GPs, nurses and practice managers, click here.

Please note that there will be no eNews for the next 2 weeks as the editor of eNews and the Information Management Program Officer are running away together for a trip to East Gippsland and don’t want to be disturbed...

... except by email in cases of emergency.

Australian Doctor Articles

Introducing the PEN CAT

On the 9th of November, 2007 1 wrote an article introducing the Practice Health Atlas, the Primary Care Collaboratives Program and the PEN Clinical Audit Tool, stressing that to take full advantage of these 3 programs you need “clean” clinical data.

We have since moved great distances from those early days with our use of the CAT and many practices have benefited from their involvement in the Collaboratives.
The need for accurate clinical records still resonates today, 5 years later, with what is still being recommended in preparation for the PIP eHealth and the PCeHR. To read the complete article click here.

Information Management

Medical Director Tip - CDA Documents in LetterWriter

When you open LetterWriter and select New you will notice there is a new e-Health tab with a list of CDA templates. As far as I know this is to prepare Medical Director for secure messaging capabilities, either using HCN’s MD Exchange or a 3rd party messaging system (Argus, for example). I am not quite sure where the implementation of this is up do and I will endeavor to find out. I did look up MD Help, even if only to understand what CDA meant. The Help screen, quoted below, left me no wiser.

“Clinical Document Architecture (CDA) is an XML-based markup standard for specifying the encoding, structure and semantics of clinical documents for exchange. CDA-based documents are saved to the Letters tab of a patient's clinical record, along with other correspondence such as letters. When you open a CDA document, it is opened in the CDA Viewer.”

I will endeavor to shed more light on this after my 2 week sojourn in East Gippsland.
